WEC 48: on PPV.

Well look whom we have here! It’s Kevin, back from a successful round of, “I’m really awesome at picking fights”. I’ll let you all suck on Frankie Edgar winning for a second…..

All right, now that that’s taken care of let’s get started. WEC 48 is the WEC’s first foray into the PPV market, and they are making one hella’va splash. Normally they put their shows on deep ass cable, who really watches the VERSUS channel anyways. I’ve heard people bitch for hours on the fact that WEC shouldn’t be charging full PPV price for this card, well I say, go whine about something else, just because you don’t know all these guys doesn’t mean shit. This is a stacked card and will be one of the best of the year. On that note, lets get to this.

-Jose Aldo (16-1; #1 Featherweight)* vs. Urijah Faber (23-3; #3 Featherweight)

All right! I have been waiting forever to give a review with Urijah Faber, and now I can. This fight is going to be badass kiddies. Jose Aldo is a wrecking machine standing on his feet. He has knocked out just about every fighter he has come in contact with; most of those knockouts are in the first round and in devastating fashion. Aldo’s flying knee on Cub Swanson was one of the best KO’s I’ve ever seen. He took the Feather Weight title from Mike Brown late last year in another lopsided beating. In this fight he’s going up against “The California Kid” Urijah Faber. Now I’m going to be up front here, Urijah Faber is my favorite fighter in the sport today. His wrestling is badass, and his ground game is top notch. His stand up is kind of old school boxing/kickboxing hybrid, but it works. Faber was the WEC featherweight champ since basically the company came into existence. He beat everyone in the company, then he ran into the brick wall named Mike Brown and lost his title. This fight is going to be amazing everyone, one word of advice, don’t blink. Aldo is known for his quick powerful shots, and Faber is known for being a bit of an “inventive” fighter. Faber has strong hands and he can knock Aldo’s head clean off. This is a tough one to call, and even though Faber is my favorite fighter it’s not swaying my decision one bit. Expect a fight of the year candidate here kids.

Winner via 2nd round TKO Urijah Faber
-Ben Henderson (11-1) vs. Donald Cerrone (11-2)

As a co-main event you really couldn’t ask for much more. Ben Henderson is a great young fighter who is already making a name for himself on the pound for pound best lists. He shocked the world when he won the interim belt just last year again Cerrone. He further stunned fans and writers alike when he dismantled Jamie Varner in 3 rounds in January to become the undisputed Light Weight Champion. Henderson has beaten some solid opponents but up until last year he hadn’t really taken out that big name fighter. Henderson is a ground wizard with 7 of his 11 wins coming from submission. But don’t let it fool you, his stand up is deadly also. Donald Cerrone is going to come into this fight ready to go to town. As much as Henderson is a ground warrior, Cerrone is that plus 5. 10 of Cerrone’s 11 wins are submissions. When I say this guy has excellent ground skills take it to the bank. However, as with Henderson Cerrone will trade some leather also. When Cerrone was beaten by Henderson last year many people (including Cerrone) thought Cerrone should have won the decision. In a lot of ways this is a grudge match. The first fight between these two was a war, going all 5 rounds; it was widely considered fight the year. Now looking at these two guys don’t get pissed of thinking your going to see a ground battle, cause that’s probably not going to happen, both guys know the other has a solid ground game, so as with last time they are going to try and keep it standing. This one is going to great. With all being said…

Winner via Split decision Donald Cerrone

-Mike Brown (23-5; #2 Featherweight)* vs. Manny Gamburyan (10-4; #7 Featherweight)

Mike Brown the former Featherweight champ. He lost his belt to Jose Aldo and wants it back. The only problem is that he has former Ultimate fighter finalist and UFC standout in his way. Brown vs. Manny is another solid super match-up that could headline a UFC event. Brown is looking to get his title back, and Manny is looking for his title shot. It’s pretty clear that whoever win’s this fight is going to have the winner of Aldo V Faber; the question is who comes out on top. Brown is the much more experienced fighter hands down, he has a great stand up and ground game. Brown used to fight at Lightweight but moved down 10 lbs and still seems to be the same size. However Manny also used to fight Lightweight and seems to have kept his same size. This fight is going to be a wrestler’s dream match; it will pit Browns takedowns against Gamburyan’s ground game off his back. I see this also being very interesting.

Winner via 2nd round TKO Mike Brown

-Anthony Njokuani (12-2) vs. Shane Roller (7-2)

I don’t know a whole lot about Njokuani but the little I know makes me excited for this fight. Not only is Njokuani coming off the biggest win of his career in knocking out pretty boy and polish faggot Chris Horodecki, but he’s riding a 3 fight win streak against some pretty big names in the division. From what I gather his game is all around good, nothing stands out as amazing but what he’s got he’s got a lot of. Shane Roller is an older fighter (31) who more recently started fighting. This will be Roller’s biggest fight of his short career, and I have a feeling he may be getting set up for a big KO for the PPV audience.

Winner via 1st round KO Anthony Njokuani

-Scott Jorgensen (9-3; #6 Bantamweight)* vs. Antonio Banuelos (17-5)

As with the last fight these 2 fighters I’m not familiar with yet. Jorgensen is the more recognized fighter (haha, you’ll laugh when you see him). He is also a bit of a boring fighter. When almost half your wins are by decision there is something wrong. These 2 guys have fought before in actually a pretty entertaining match. Banuelos came out on top last time and I think it happens in the same fashion this time.

Winner via unanimous decision Antonio Banuelos
