The Lonely Island: Incredibad Review

First let me start out by telling you a little bit about The Lonely Island boys. The lonely island consists of Andy Samberg, who rose to fame on Saturday Night Live a few years back with his “whacky” antics, and of course the, oh so loveable “Lazer Cats”. Samberg, who is certainly the face of the comedy troupe due only to his amazing good looks, is paired up with Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Tacconehe. Yes, I know what your thinking, those can’t be their real names… but alas, they are… and they are fucking amazing. Shaffer directs the majority of the outings from the TLI, including the theatrical release “Hot Rod” which I found mind numbingly funny, Jorma, who like Samberg enjoys his time in front of the camera has just as much skill behind it as well, Jorma who co-starred in Hot Rod opposite Samberg, also directed the McGruber commercial for Pepsi during the super bowl. Have I also mentioned that all 3 of these bastards are writers on SNL? No of course I didn’t because it makes my god damn blood pressure rise whenever I think these guy’s are doing movies, becoming YouTube stars, oh yeah, and getting paid to write on SNL weekly. Not that they don’t deserve it, but I’m jealous, hell I’ll admit it, I’m as green as the Hulk on a fuckin tilt-o-whirl.

Now on to the crux of me writing, this isn’t a review of TLI as a comedy trio, but a review on their recently released CD/DVD Incredibad, I figure the best way to do this is by going down each track listing and giving it a 1-6 rating (yeah that’s right 1-6, not 5, cause 5 is for queers, 6 is for winners) and then provide my commentary on each track, which I know we are ALL looking forward to.

Track 1. Who said we’re whack?

This song is a great starting off point for this CD, kind of cheesy, but at the same time it makes you smile out of pure “what the fuck-ness” the song is basically the TLI gang rapping about someone calling them whack.
Rating: 3

Track 2. Santana DVX

So this is TLI first foray into an actual song on this album, and I have to said, they nailed it. It’s funny, has great verses, and sounds realistic, yet at the same time, absurd. The story of the song is the Samberg wished Carlos Santana would make a drink
Rating; 4

Track 3. Jizz in my pants

One of the more recent and famous songs off to the Incredibad CD, a great funny song about 2 guys who can’t seem to stop “jazzing” in their pants. The video really does this song justice, because Samberg looks like every “Chris martin/Coldplay, or Pop punk band” douche in history.

Track 4. I’m on a boat

One of my personal favorite songs on this album, It features the great T-pain, of such successful songs as … fuck I don’t know? Anything with little Wayne? Anyways this song is the lonely islands 3rd single off the album. It is by far the best. Especially Akiva’s line “fuck buoys, I climb tree’s mother fucker” simply classic.
Rating: 6

Track 5. Sax Man

A good fun song, featuring, the one and only Jack Black. One of the best parts of this song is when Jack Black gives the cue to the “sax” player to “take it away” and what ensues can only be described as a dying giraffe.
Rating: 2

Track 6. Lazy Sunday

Not much I can actually say about this tune, most of you know it from a few years ago as what really started the whole SNL Digital short era. Honestly it doesn’t hold up as well as some of the other songs on the album, but still it brings back great memories of when you first heard of these funny bastards.
Rating: 2

Track 7. Normal Guy (interlude)

This isn’t a song but a short skit. It’s a short little “scene” about 2 friends and one weirdo who thinks he’s a normal guy. Not much more to say about it…
Rating: 3

Track 8. Boombox

By far the best song on this album, hands down for me. This song is a cautionary tale of the power of a boom box and the way it can change the world. It starts with getting people to dance, and end with old people fucking. Need I say more?
Rating: 6

Track 9. Shrooms (interlude)

Can’t really describe this song. It’s Samberg screaming “I’m on shrooms” for about 30 seconds. Classic Samberg nonsense. But great none the less.
Rating: 3

Track 10. Like a Boss

Another amazing song, mocking horrible rap music, that’s being put out now days. It’s Samberg describing his daily routine as “the boss”. We actually find out that Samberg hit’s on girls, sucks a dudes dick, eats some chicken strips, sucks his own dick, pukes on desks, turns into a jet, bombs the Russians, chops his balls off, then dies by crashing into the son.. All this… daily… and saying “like a boss” every other line… genius.
Rating 6

Track 11. We like Sports

This track is a Jorma and Akiva only joint. It’s funny in the fact that they are just 2 normal guys who love sports, and are going sing about it, however just the delivery of their song gives you the feeling they are not quite fans.. Funny, funny stuff and the video makes it better.

Track 12. Dream Girl (brought to you by chex mix)

This song is great. Period. It’s about the 3 guys who are in love with a girl that by conventional standards is fugly. She has “teeth so straight I thought she was British” get the irony their! Get it! Get it!? None the less it’s a great song because of this one line “Last week, thought I saw you on the street, turns out it was a bag of trash Just a big ol’ bag of trash, I thought you looked like a bag of trash”

Track 13. Ras Trent

You may recall this song as another SNL digital short. Its Samberg dressed as a Rastafarian. Dreds and all sucka. The song itself is good, but without the video it lacks a bit. If you watch the video of this which is included on the DVD portion it’s amazing.

Track 14. Dick in a box

Probably the most famous of all TLI songs. Featuring Justin Timberlake. A classic song that is defiantly fun to listen to. Not really to much I can include about it because I’m sure everyone has heard it.

Track 15. The old Saloon (interlude)

This song is fucking amazing. It mocks about every “underground mix tape” song that you’ve ever heard. It has random yelling in the song like “BRAND NEW SHIT” or “DJ BLAH BLAH!” not to mention it’s just random guys singing? About being in the old west but not making any sense, all the while with the narrator screaming, and random sound effects like gunshots and horse’s going off… it’s the greatest lampooning of a genera I’ve heard in a long time.
Rating 6

Track 16. Punch you in the Jeans

This is going to be the 4th single released off this album, it certainly isn’t the strongest, and wouldn’t have been what I picked but it’s fun, and from what I’ve seen will be a funny video. It’s about the 3 guys talking about how they are going to, yep you guess it, punch you in the jeans.
Rating: 3

Track 17. Space Olympics

This is a Samberg only joint, and it is great. I can see how a lot of people won’t like this song, but it sounds like a futuristic love ballad… of sorts. Its Samberg singing to us about the Olympics being held in space, and telling the contestants the “rules” but by the end of the song the oxygen has run out in the space station, and aliens are attacking.
Rating: 5

Track 18. Natalie’s Rap

The infamous, Natalie Portman rap. When this song first came out it was amazing, then it got old. But listening to it again, uncensored, with Portman telling me she’s going to “bust in dude’s mouths like gushers mother fucker” makes me fall in love all over again. However, I think Samberg steals the song with his lyrics “As for the drug use, Well I can vouch for that my dick is scared of you Girl “
Rating 5

Track 19. Incredibad

The final track on this album doesn’t disappoint. In fact it explains the whole CD. Apparently back when TLI boys were but wee 13 year old boys ground up in the bay area an alien from mars came down and told them that their was a genetic defect in his DNA, and that he needed the 3 boys to have sex with him to fix the problem. Great song, and it ends with the reason why the Album artwork is what it is, and why the CD is titled Incredibad (which I won’t tell you why).

All in all this CD does provide some laugh your ass off funny moments. There is certainly a lot more laughs than not with this album. They lampoon a lot of music in here, but not in a Weird Al style, which I was worried about. TLI boys don’t take themselves serious in this album at all, and it shows, but they still put out a great sounding fun CD to listen to. Overall I would recommend it to everyone.
