The Kentucky Derby: Pops picks

Posted on 02 May 2009

I love gambling like my own flesh and blood child, but I dont know jack shit about the pony races, so I brought in an expert for horse racings biggest day.  Pops Higgins.  Thats right, I said it.  Who can I trust more than my own father? Or better yet who can I ridicule and make fun of more if his picks suck ass?

Here are the pops XXX Specials.

friesan_fire1. Friesan Fire #6 – good numbers, good earnings, GREAT IN THE MUD, the only real mudder in the field. I have him handicapped out to be 5th or 6th but give him the edge in the mud.

2. I Wand Revenge #13 - Best Numbers, OK earnings per race, everyone’s favorite, beaten twice by “Pioneer of the Nile” but looks good coming into the run for the roses

SCRATCHED

3. Pioneer of the Nile #16 – Great numbers all around, won the Santa Anita Derby, my personal favorite track and home of the breeders cup this year. Stellar in last three races. Numbers put it just barely behind “I Want Revenge.” Crappy post position (16th) on a muddy track is a tuff draw to overcome, 50/50 chance if he goes to the front early. Might just win the race.

4. Musketman #2 – Comes out fourth in the numbers, has no grade one races, 5 wins in 6 starts lifetime and a bunch of bullet work outs means that Musketman may sneak in for a piece of the dough.

Horses to avoid

Chocolate Candy #11 – The name says it all, need I explain.

Regal Randsom #10 – Numbers, earnings skewed due to races in the UAE, big bucks. This pony will get a call or two, then fade to nowwheresville.

Desert Party #19 – God awful post position, and numbers are skewed due to UAE big bucks races.

Horses #17, #18 & #20, glue factory material, fillers in the race, a waste of space on the hallowed grounds of Churchill Downs.

BREAKING NEWS…..”I WANT REVENGE” HAS BEEN SCRATCHED, I REPEAT, “I WANT REVENGE” HAS BEEN SCRATCHED. SELL THOSE WORTHLESS MUTUAL FUNDS, CASH IN YOUR CD’S, BREAK THE PIGGYBANK AND PUT IT ALL ON THE FUTURE KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER “FRIESAN FIRE”. INCLUDE SOME EXOTIC BETS EXACTA’S AND TRIFECTAS ALSO. SEE YOU AT THE PAYOFF WINDOW.

Well boys and girls, my bets are in. $20 win and place on Friesan Fire. $5 exacta box 2-6-16 see above for names. $2 trifecta box 2-6-16 and just in case $10 to win and place on Musketman. Mark My Words, I NEVER lose, just ask my boy. Duke, please make some picks of your own or admit that the pops is the man and you are following his lead.

Not even a mention of Dunkirk? What kind of picks are these? Dunkirk to win the derby, followed by friesan fire, followed by general quarters and 4th Pioneer of the Nile.

A Few words for the negative talkers out there in horsey land. If you would have taken my bets straight up, you lose the winner but get place money on Pioneer of the Nile 8.40 for a 2.00 bet and 6.40 to show. Also Musketman paid a whopping 12.00 to show. It appears that my number one pick Friesan Fire was ATTACKED during the race, see the following quote from an eyeball witness on scene…Favored Friesan Fire grabbed a quarter out of the gate (left front). “He got hit really badly out of the gate and grabbed a quarter. He’s bleeding,” trainer Larry Jones said.

So next time boys and girls, just place my bets as I state them and you will come out money ahead.

Still Crying about the 18th place finish
    Pops
